Event names that survive a redesign

How we review measurement plans so conversion events still make sense after screens move, merge, or disappear.

Wall of charts and sticky notes in a planning room

Measurement Plan Reviews often arrive two weeks before a visual redesign. Teams want new screens and old charts to remain comparable. That only works if event names describe decisions, not pixel layouts.

We mark every event that includes a screen title, colour, or temporary experiment code. Those names break when the layout changes. Prefer names tied to user decisions: kyc_document_submitted, trial_plan_selected, guest_checkout_chosen.

A practical check

For each funnel stage, write the business question first, then the event. If the question survives the redesign, the event name should too. If the question is “did they see the green banner,” it belongs in a short-lived experiment log, not in the long-term conversion funnel.

Bring that list to a Measurement Plan Review and we will mark which names are safe to keep through your next release.
